Cleaning an infected computer one person's method 

Lavasoft Adaware is a highly regarded spyware-checking program. Adaware SE Personal is free for private use.

Enabling/Disabling Detection and Removal of Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs)  Worth doing if spyware/trojan suspected on a computer and you are using Mcafee.

If you suspect that malware has changed your browser then you can reset the web settings for Internet Explorer:

1. Close Internet Explorer.

2. Open Control Panel. Click -Start -Settings -Control Panel.

3. Double-click Internet Options icon.

4. Programs tab.

5. Click the Reset Web Settings button.

6. Select Also reset my home page. Click Yes.

7. Click OK.

Disabling system restore. System restore may restore the virus or malware that has been removed. Here are Mcafee notes for disabling system restore: disable system restore
