Right Click on My Computer: Details about operating system, main memory and CPU. Device manager includes some information about computer components. If the CPU is described with the words family, model and maybe stepping then you may find some more detail for Intel processors on this page:
0710intelfamilies.doc Note: This document does not list all the intel families.
Accessories - System Tools: May have an entry called system information which includes more details.
Winaudit A small freeware utility which does not require installation and can be run on a workstation to display an exhaustive report. The report can be saved in several modes (text, database, web, spreadsheet). It can be run in command line mode - documentation here {Thanks to Brad Ford for alerting me to Winaudit}. For me winaudit is the best of the bunch. I have saved the html version of the report files which are easier to navigate and search for particular information.
Bginfo: A freeware utility that displays on the computer screen a selection of details about the computer, such as memory, IP address, logged in user, amount of free space on the hard drive etc. Can output the details to an rtf file.
Sisoft Sandra: A program available in a Lite or Pro form which provides and exhaustive amount of detail, benchmarking etc.
Intel provide two utilities which display CPU information. You will find a list of which CPU (Processors) each utility works with here
The download and information links for each utility are at the foot of that page. A bootable version of at least one of the utilities can be created making checking of older computers simpler.
