Philips VOIP321 Dual Phone Twin Pack
A phone that can be used for Skype as well as landline calls. This pack came with a USB base station and two wireless handsets including batteries and 3 power packs.
The wireless handsets mean that calls can be made away from the computer-internet connection and that people with little computer understanding can use Skype for calls. Calling is as easy as using a mobile phone for a contacts list, or dialling a number. The only extra thing to do is to press the Skype key first - otherwise the phone will operate over the landline connected to the base station.
Installation was straightforward from the supplied CD. The only thing to watch is that the manual emphasises not downloading newer versions of skype before checking the Philips site to confirm compatibility with the Philips base station system. Not easy to verify this online - see below.
Most Skype menu items are accessible from the handset - though only a two-line skype display. This included contacts, account balance etc. Skype status can be set from the handset also (online, offline etc)
The system was easy to setup - reception was clear and the handset could reach the base station from all parts of a domestic residence.
Verifying compatibility between base station drivers and newer versions of Skype was not straightforward. The appropriate link was:
